They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging. They can be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are often found on the thighs, backs of the calves, or the inside of the leg. Although less common, varicose veins can occur in other areas of the body and they are not always visible. Pain or cramp-like symptoms can also be an indication of varicose veins.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975263275\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What are spider veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They also are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. Often, they are red, purple, or blue. They can look like tree branches or spiderwebs with their short, jagged lines. They can be found anywhere on the legs and can cover either a very small or very large area of skin.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975282521\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">How common are varicose and spider veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Varicose and spider veins are very common and affect 1 out of every 3 adults. About 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. Varicose veins affect half of people 50 years and older.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975299745\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What causes varicose veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Any condition that puts excessive pressure on the legs or abdomen can lead to varicose veins. The most common pressure inducers are pregnancy, obesity, and standing for long periods of time. Being sedentary may also contribute to varicose veins. The likelihood of forming varicose veins also increases as veins weaken with age. A previous leg injury may damage the valves in a vein which can result in varicosity. Genetics also plays a role, so if other family members have varicose veins there is a greater chance you will, too. Contrary to popular belief, sitting with crossed legs will not cause varicose veins, although it can aggravate an existing condition. The most common reason for the development of varicose veins is from vein reflux disease.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975313158\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What causes spider veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Spider veins can be caused when blood pools in veins near the surface of the skin. They can also be caused by hormone changes, exposure to the sun, injuries, pregnancy, heredity, weight gain, and standing or sitting for long periods of time.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975331038\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What is vein reflux disease? What is venous insufficiency?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Vein reflux disease, also known as venous insufficiency, is a medical condition affecting the circulation of blood in the legs.\u00a0<em>Arteries<\/em>\u00a0are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart down to the legs. The &#8220;used&#8221; blood then returns up the legs to the heart through separate blood vessels called\u00a0<em>veins<\/em>. When standing, the blood in the veins will flow up the leg against gravity. Veins have valves inside them that act as one-way flaps to prevent blood from flowing backward. If the valves break down or become damaged, the blood will flow backward on itself. Essentially, the blood will then get &#8220;backed up&#8221; in the vein and all the branches draining into this vein will also get backed up. Over time, more and more of the blood then &#8220;pools&#8221; in the veins and its branches causing the veins to stretch and enlarge. The veins closest to the skin are the ones we see as varicose veins. Vein reflux disease is the most common cause of varicose veins. Vein reflux disease is a progressive medical condition and may cause your symptoms to worsen.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975344184\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What are the signs and symptoms of varicose veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Varicose veins can often be seen under the skin. Some other common symptoms of varicose veins in the legs include:<br\/>Aching pain that may get worse after sitting or standing for a long time<br\/>Throbbing<br\/>Cramping (particularly at night)<br\/>Heaviness<br\/>Tiredness<br\/>Swelling<br\/>Rash that\u2019s itchy or irritated<br\/>Restless legs<br\/>Darkening of the skin (in severe cases)<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975386537\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Are varicose veins and spider veins dangerous?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Varicose veins are usually not dangerous, and may not cause any problems, however, they may cause aching pain, throbbing, and discomfort. In some cases, varicose veins can lead to more serious health problems. These include:<br\/><br\/><strong>Sores or skin ulcers.\u00a0<\/strong>Due to chronic (long-term) backing up of blood, these sores or ulcers are painful and hard to heal. Sometimes they cannot heal until the backward blood flow in the vein is repaired.<br\/><br\/><strong>Bleeding.<\/strong>\u00a0The skin over the veins becomes thin and easily injured. When an injury occurs, there can be significant blood loss.<br\/><br\/><strong>Phlebitis.\u00a0<\/strong>A blood clot that forms in a vein just below the skin. Symptoms include skin redness; a firm, tender, warm vein; and sometimes pain and swelling.<br\/><br\/><strong>Deep vein thrombosis.\u00a0<\/strong>A blood clot that forms in a deeper vein. It can cause a \u201cpulling\u201d feeling in the calf, pain, warmth, redness, and swelling. However, sometimes it causes no significant symptoms. If the blood clot travels to the lungs, it can be fatal.<br\/><br\/>Spider veins are rarely a serious health problem, but they can cause uncomfortable feelings in the legs. If there are symptoms from spider veins, most often they will be itching or burning. Less often, spider veins can be a sign of blood backup deeper inside that you can\u2019t see on the skin. If so, you could have the same symptoms you would have with varicose veins. Rarely, larger spider veins can bleed if scratched or bumped.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975416411\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Are varicose veins hereditary?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Many times, yes. Heredity is a primary factor in over 80% of varicose vein cases. Other contributing factors may include pregnancy, obesity, hormone therapy, standing or sitting for long periods of time and injury.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975429764\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Do men get varicose veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Although women are affected at a higher percentage than men, men can also be troubled with varicose veins and their associated symptoms (and benefit from treatment). As many as 45% of men will get varicose veins at some point in their lifetime.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975438360\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Why do I need an ultrasound examination of my legs?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">A patient with symptoms may or may not have visible varicose veins in their legs. An ultrasound examination of the major veins inside the leg is essential to assess for vein reflux disease or detect varicose veins present beneath the skin. This is the most common cause or source for varicose veins as well as the associated symptoms. Any treatment of varicose veins and its associated symptoms must begin with addressing the source. Getting an ultrasound is non-invasive and painless.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975452602\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What is a free vein screening?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Any person who (suspects they have) has varicose or spider veins in their legs can call or make an appointment for a free vein screening. The appointment involves a quick non-invasive ultrasound of your legs, and a meeting with a vascular specialist to discuss the results of the ultrasound. Afterward, a vascular specialist will discuss and review potential treatment options with you.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Prevention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975720136\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Can varicose veins be prevented?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Not all varicose and spider veins can be prevented, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting new varicose and spider veins. These same things can help ease discomfort from the ones you already have:<br\/><br\/>Exercise regularly to improve your leg strength, circulation, and vein strength. Focus on exercises that work your legs, such as walking or running.<br\/><br\/>Control your weight to avoid placing too much pressure on your legs.<br\/><br\/>Eat a low-salt diet rich in high-fiber foods. Eating fiber reduces the chances of constipation, which can contribute to varicose veins. High-fiber foods include fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains, like bran. Eating less salt can help with the swelling that comes with varicose veins.<br\/><br\/>Avoid wearing high heels for long periods of time. Lower-heeled shoes can help tone your calf muscles to help blood move through your veins.<br\/><br\/>Elevate your legs when resting as much as possible.<br\/><br\/>Don\u2019t stand or sit for long periods of time. If you must stand for a long time, shift your weight from one leg to the other every few minutes. If you must sit for long periods of time, stand up and move around or take a short walk every 30 minutes.<br\/><br\/>Wear elastic support stockings and avoid tight clothing that constricts your waist, groin, or legs.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975764336\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What factors increase my risk for varicose veins and spider veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Many factors increase a person&#8217;s chances of developing varicose or spider veins. These include:<br\/><br\/><strong>Increasing age.<\/strong>\u00a0As you get older, the valves in your veins may weaken and not work as well.<br\/><br\/><strong>Medical history.<\/strong>\u00a0Being born with weak vein valves increases your risk. Having family members with vein problems also increases your risk. About half of all people who have varicose veins have a family member who has them too.<br\/><br\/><strong>Hormonal changes.<\/strong>\u00a0These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone also may contribute to the forming of varicose or spider veins.<br\/><br\/><strong>Pregnancy.<\/strong>\u00a0During pregnancy, there is a large increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The growing uterus also puts pressure on the veins. Varicose veins usually improve within three months after delivery. More varicose veins and spider veins usually appear with each additional pregnancy.<br\/><br\/><strong>Body Mass Index.\u00a0<\/strong>Being overweight or obese can put extra pressure on your veins. This can lead to varicose veins.<br\/><br\/><strong>Lack of movement.<\/strong>\u00a0Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975801567\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Should I see a doctor about varicose veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">You should see a doctor about varicose veins if:<br\/><br\/>You develop symptoms of varicose veins including heaviness, tiredness, or swelling in the legs, or itching or burning in the lower extremities<br\/><br\/>The vein has become swollen, red, or very tender or warm to the touch<br\/><br\/>There are sores or a rash on the leg or near the ankle<br\/><br\/>The skin on the ankle and calf becomes thick and changes color<br\/><br\/>A varicose vein begins to bleed<br\/><br\/>Your varicose vein symptoms are interfering with daily activities including sleep<br\/><br\/>The appearance of your veins is causing you distress<br\/><br\/>If you\u2019re having pain associated with varicose or spider veins, even if it\u2019s just a dull ache, don\u2019t hesitate to get help.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1692975837382\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What is the treatment for varicose veins and spider veins?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">To relieve the discomfort that may be associated with varicose veins, your doctor may recommend conservative measures including compression stockings and\/or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and aspirin. Over time, the varicose veins can grow and extend throughout the legs and often are associated with symptoms such as burning, throbbing, aching, heaviness, cramping, and restlessness. Swelling of the lower legs and ankles can develop. Often, conservative measures are not enough or fail to alleviate the symptoms and medical, Clinic-based procedures can then be performed.<br\/><br\/>After a discussion of the patient&#8217;s symptoms and a physical examination of the legs, an ultrasound is performed to study the major veins in the legs assessing for any functional or structural abnormalities in determining a possible cause for the varicose veins and symptoms.
