Phlebectomy for bulging varicose veins

When veins are too large for an injection, phlebectomy removes them completely, through openings so small they don't need stitches. You stay comfortable and awake the whole time, and you're quickly back to the things you love.

Procedure time

30–60 minutes

An in-office outpatient visit

Anesthesia

Local anesthetic

Just the area being treated is numbed

Recovery

Back to most activities

Most patients resume right away

Aftercare

No stitches, no scarring

Incisions too small to need sutures

What is a phlebectomy?

Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure that removes large varicose veins through a series of tiny incisions. “Ambulatory” just means you walk in and walk out. You may also hear it called microphlebectomy or stab phlebectomy.

Varicose veins form when the small valves inside a vein weaken, so blood pools instead of flowing back to the heart. Those damaged valves can't be repaired, so the diseased vein is removed and blood reroutes to healthier veins nearby.

Removes the bulge for good

The visible vein is physically taken out, so it can't refill, addressing both look and symptoms.

Improves circulation

With the faulty vein gone, blood flows through healthy vessels and the leg feels lighter.

Replaced old vein stripping

A gentler, in-office alternative to the invasive hospital surgery of the past.

What our doctors think of phlebectomy

“Patients are often bracing for the old vein-stripping surgery their parents had. Then they realize it's done right in the office, through tiny openings, and they walk out the same day. The relief on their faces says it all.”

What makes phlebectomy different

Why our doctors reach for it over old-fashioned vein stripping.

In-office, local anesthetic

Done in our office with local numbing: no hospital stay, no general anesthesia.

Tiny openings, no sutures

The micro-incisions are too small for stitches and leave little to no noticeable scarring.

Removes the vein completely

The bulging vein is taken out entirely, addressing both the look and the symptoms at once.

Back to life quickly

Most people return to their everyday activities immediately, with only mild bruising for a few days.

How phlebectomy works, step by step

Four quick steps, from numbing the vein to walking out.

01

Numb and mark the vein

Your specialist maps the bulging veins and numbs just the area being treated with a local anesthetic, so you stay comfortable and awake throughout.

02

Tiny micro-incisions

A series of pinpoint openings are made along the vein, so small they don't require stitches.

03

Remove the vein in sections

The diseased vein is gently lifted out in small segments through those tiny openings. Once it's gone, blood naturally reroutes to healthy veins.

04

Bandage and you're done

Small adhesive bandages cover the openings, a compression wrap goes on, and most patients walk out and return to normal activity right away.

Relief you can feel, not just see

Large varicose veins do more than look uncomfortable. They often ache, throb, and weigh your legs down by the end of the day. Removing the diseased vein commonly eases the symptoms that come with it:

Aching or crampingHeavinessSwellingFatigueRestless legsSkin changes

Phlebectomy questions, answered

The things patients ask us most before getting started.

Sclerotherapy fades smaller spider and surface veins with an injection. Phlebectomy physically removes larger, bulging varicose veins that are too big for injection, through tiny micro-incisions. Many patients have a combination of treatments for the best result.
